The night of 27th 26th was clear with a full moon. The search light was worked at intervals, but no answering flare was seen.

2. On reaching the "Janue" at 8.30 a.m. on 28th she was taken in tow, hoses passed over and we proceeded to pump boiler water to her. This operation was being successfully performed, when "Janus* suddenly went ahead owing to some mistake in engine room. The "Cadmus" went ahead too to avoid parting the hawser, when "Jamus" going quickly astern again slackened the hawser and hawser and hoses were immediately round our screw.

The ships were lying parallel to one another with engines stopped, "Janus" to leeward and overlapping.

The screw was cleared and **anus" taken in tow by 12.30 p.m., but owing to a fresh head wind and a head sea only slow speed could be maintained, the average to Gap Rock being 5 knots. Oil was used, and made the conditions for "Janus # easier. A strong Westerly current was experienced on both days.

At Gap Rock I found the "Handy" at anchor. I ordered her in at once, and followed with the "Janus" who, at 7 a.m. had made sufficient water to allow her to go in under her own steam.
